“There’s a big social question out there around dentistry and why it isn’t part of the public health system,” says Jerome Marburg, Registrar and CEO of the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. “There is a portion of the population for which cost is a hurdle.”

How high that hurdle goes, is something that still needs to be determined. Research conducted by the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry, suggests that 20 to 25 per cent of Canadians, which translates roughly to 1 in 5 Canadians or 8 million people, reported a barrier to going to the dentist due to financial costs. This can be seen as a lack of access to dentists due to cost or not getting all the treatment needed due to monetary constraints.

A few years ago, I had to go to the dentist because of a toothache.   I found a dentist in Cranbrook who was able to fit me in right away, he took x-rays, gave me some antibiotics and we made an appointment for a root canal.

After a year, and several thousand dollars later (money that I really didn’t have) my smile was worse than before I started; all of my back teeth were pulled, my partials were uncomfortable and didn’t fit well on the metal pegs he put in, I couldn’t bite or talk properly because my front teeth weren’t closing.  I was in tears – his advise was that I spend more money getting the top teeth capped which may solve the problem.  NOT!

I wish I saw this Marketplace report before I started the process.

Don`t ignore your intuition. Please make sure you get second and third opinions before you dish out that kind of coin.

I was exhausted & depressed.  I isolated myself and felt so guilty for being selfish wanting that nice smile.

While I was researching rv’s I came across a couple who went to Mexico for their dentalwork.

My mom lives in Mexico, she offered to do the research and help me fix my smile.  I flew down to PV at the end of August.  10 days later, after pulling out roots and crooked posts that the 1st dentist left in, 13 caps and a new partial I am pleased to say I am a very happy lady.

All of this work cost less that what I spent initially. I have a $20,000. mouth for about a third of the cost.

If you are needing dental work and are considering going to Mexico may I suggest Dr. Michel.  I am hoping in a few years I can save up for implants to get rid of this partial.  How did Dr. Michel put it? Some people feel like a horse with a bit in it’s mouth…  I think another trip to Puerto Vallarta will be wonderful!

Love to hear your thoughts about going to the dentist!
